Frequently Asked Questions

  • All pickups are made right here in America’s Heartland. Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, each pickup is built to order and fabricated in my workshop.

  • Every pickup is built to order and hand crafted to produce the finest guitar tone possible. At the moment all orders generally ship within 3 to 4 weeks.

  • To reduce microphonic feedback and mechanical failure all single coils and humbucker pickups are wax potted with a blend of paraffin and beeswax. Vintage pickups can be left unpotted so they can retain that necessary vintage sparkle. If you wish to leave your pickup unpotted you can choose that option when placing your order.

  • The DCR is the resistance of the magnet wire which is extremely sensitive to temperature changes. The resistance is merely use as a reference, and does not indicate the true output. A slightly different reading will not affect your tone.

  • If you prefer vintage correct wiring then 2-wire vintage braided is what you will want for your humbuckers. For more advanced wiring options, such as series/parallel, in/out of phase and coil splitting, you will need to select the 4-conductor wire. Even If your guitar is not equipped with coil split switches or push/pull pots, it is generally recommended to select the 4-wire for future mods and upgrades.

  • RW/RP or reverse wound/reverse polarity indicates the orientation of a coil and magnets of a pickup in relation to the pickup it is being matched. On single coil pickups, when they are selected together, they will achieve hum-cancelling effect.

  • Absolutely! You are chasing a specific tone? Whatever is on your mind I can help you achieve that tone. Just contact me! I would love to discuss it with you.

  • Upon completion of your build each pickup is visually inspected, and put through a series of rigorous test. The DCR, inductance and capacitance is checked. To determine the frequency response, pickups are connected to a frequency generator and an oscilloscope. This test will create a bode plot, and reveal the resonant peak, and resonant frequency of that pickup. Knowing the resonant peak of a pickup is crucial to make an educated guess as to how that pickup will behave in regards to tone. A complete test report will be shipped with your pickups. This report also includes information such as winding direction, magnet type, polarity, and magnetic strength gauss.

  • Magnets are a complicated subject. They come in different sizes, strength, and are measured in Gauss. Heartland pickups uses Alnico 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and Ceramic 8 magnets. Unless otherwise requested by a customer, all magnets are magnetized by myself, and then degaussed accordingly to balance the pickup.

  • In most cases, we recommend using 250K pots for single coils, and 500K for humbuckers and P90’s. Lower pot values will lessened high frequencies, and higher pot values will emphasize high frequencies.

  • I am a lefty myself so yes! I got you covered. Keep in mind that you only need a left handed pickup when you are ordering a pickup with staggered pole piece. And even then you can still use a standard pickup if that’s the type of tone you are chasing. All other pickups have sufficient lead length to wire any guitar.

  • Nice try! Short answer is no. This goes for anything that would step on Trademark territory.

  • All Heartland pickups come with a one year replacement warranty which covers manufacturing defects. No other warranties are expressed or implied.

  • All orders will have a tracking number provided. The tracking number is provided upon the completion of the order and package shipped. In some instances a signature may be required for delivery.

  • Custom orders are not returnable, or refundable, unless damaged in shipment. They are covered under the standard one year warranty.
